Weston Little League - Summer 2014 Program

This summer, Weston Little League will offer District, Travel and Sandlot programs for our players.  We are very excited that our summer participation continues to increase every year and we encourage every Weston Little League kid who wants to actively play more baseball to join the fun and more competitive experience that they will remember for a long time!

In order to create the best experience for all kids, we are opening registration earlier this year so we can better plan our teams and coaches, thereby ensuring the best experience for all children in all age brackets, of all abilities.
As a result, we are asking that anyone interested in EITHER District or Travel Ball to pre-register by May 7 for a fee of $50.  This is a non-refundable fee to secure a spot for Summer ball (you will select either District or Travel in the registration form).  We expect the summer fee to be comparable to last year at $200-$250, depending on the number of registrations and the likely games and/or tournaments for the teams.
If your player registers for District, but is not selected to be on District, we would place him/her on a Travel team if such a team is available (we are not able to guarantee a Travel team at every age level).
We aspire to field three District teams:

  • Little League 11/12
  • Little League 10/11
  • Little League 9/10

?*Please note that a player’s “Little League” age is their age on April 30, 2014.  A copy of players birth certificate will be required for age verification if your player is selected for a District team.

Participation on these teams is determined by Coach and/or player selection and vote, and final team rosters are WLL Board approved.  The number of District teams we ultimately field this summer will depend on the pool of registrants as well as their skill and ability.  Remember, District play is highly competitive. The WLL Board will ultimately determine whether we field two or three teams.  Ordinarily, players selected to the District teams are currently in fourth through seventh grade.

The District Teams compete in the Little League Connecticut District 1 Tournament for the right to continue to play in State and National Little League Championships.  This is a highly competitive and a time intensive league.
Playing on a District Team is a significant time commitment for both players and parents.  We anticipate the District season to begin the 2rd week of June and some teams may continue through the first week of August while others might end in July.  Practices for District are typically most weeknights as well as weekends until games start two weeks later.  Once the games begin, there will be approximately 1-2 practices per week with approximately 3 games per week.  Essentially, it’s approximately 5-6 days of baseball a week for a period of about 6-7 weeks from early to mid-June through the month of July. Attendance at practices and games are mandatory for participation in the District pool and subsequent tournaments.
This summer, Weston Little League will also offer numerous Travel Teams.  In the past, we have fielded Travel teams that play home games at Bisceglie Park and travel games in towns such as Wilton, Ridgefield and Darien.  The teams generally fall into these “Little League” age categories:  6/7s (current first graders), 7/8s (current second graders), 8/9s (current third graders), 9/10s, 10/11s, and 11/12s. The number of teams and age breakdowns will be based on the pool of registrants, and the league will do its best to field competitive teams to accommodate all children.
We anticipate the Travel season to begin the 3rd week of June and some teams may continue through the first week of August while others might end in July.
Travel teams are comprised of players not selected or too young for District Teams, those who do not wish the degree of competitiveness and time commitment of District Team play, or those who just wish to have more flexibility with their schedule.  Attendance at all practices and games is not mandatory, but the League does desire that Travel team players commit to 80% of the games and practices.

This summer we hope to put together a LL8/9 tournament team (current third grade players) that will compete in 1 or 2 tournaments.  This will be highly competitive team in preparation for District play the summer year.

We will also be offering “free” sandlot games on a weekly (usually a Saturday or Sunday) basis.  More information on Sandlot will follow separately but in the past this has been typically for the lower/younger divisions (A-AA).
