WESTON LITTLE LEAGUE - LOCAL RULES FOR SINGLE A LEAGUE

Updated September 1, 2010

PLEASE REFER TO LEAGUE RULES TAB FOR GENERAL RULES.

Single A league specific rules:

·         No score is kept

·         The team at bat provides a coach-pitcher. Coaches will have a tee available to use at their discretion for instructional purposes, or at the request of the player. For example, a good use of the tee is for the player who consistently does not make contact after approximately 8 pitches.  Catchers must wear a mask.

·         There are no balls and strikes.  The parent pitches until the child hits the ball.     After approximately 8 pitches the batter walks.  Pitchers should pitch from approximately 25-30 feet, and can pitch overhand or underhand.  The coach will pitch in a manner that allows his players to hit the ball before the pitch limit is exceeded.

·         All players bat through the order. A half inning will end after batting through the full line-up. There is not a set number of innings.  A new inning cannot start unless both coaches feel that the full inning can be completed before time expires. Total time for games (including warm-ups) will be 2 hours.

·         After the first inning, count 4 players forward in the lineup to get the next inning’s leadoff batter. Therefore, in the second inning the 5th child in the order bats leadoff, and in the 3rd inning, the 9th child bats leadoff.  Coaches should create a new batting order for each game changing the kid’s placement in the order.

·         If a batter/runner is out on base they go off the field. Coaches, please enforce this.

·         A batter can advance only one base for a ball hit in the infield.  No extra bases on overthrows – we want players to attempt the throw.  (e.g., the second baseman fields a groundball and throws to first.  The first base man cannot catch it and it rolls to the fence.  The runner remains on first)

·         On balls hit to the outfield, the runner must stop at the base he is approaching after the ball enters the diamond (e.g., if the runner is past second base and before third when ball enters infield, he may advance to third). The first and third base coaches will control this.

·         No leading or headfirst sliding

·         Adults only for base coaches.

      Fielding:

·         All players play the field.  One or two coaches may be stationed behind 2nd or SS to help position the players, but should not assist in making plays.  Players should not be put in a line across the infield – coaches should put players in positions (1st, 2nd, SS, 3rd, P) with extra players aligned along the shallow outfield.

·         Opposing coaches should indicate to the team in the field to move back if a strong hitter is at bat.

·         Coaches must rotate players through the left and right sides of the infield, as well as between the infield and outfield.  Players should have a chance to play each position during the season, taking safety into account.

·         Focus on teaching the players to throw to the correct base, even if the throw is off line and the receiver can’t
