Weston Little League Players and Parents

The fall season is almost upon us, so we wanted to welcome everyone back and get you caught up on what’s happened while you were enjoying your summer break.

Fall Registration Is Open!
Registration for the fall Little League season is now open.  Once again we will have a full season with at least 5 divisions of play, accommodating all players from first grade through age 12.  Some key dates to remember:
- Registration closes on August 25
- Division and team assignments by September 3
- games and practices start the week of September 6
-
coaches’ meetingSeptember 7
Please note that any registration after August 26 cannot be guaranteed placement and incurs a late fee, so don’t wait.  More details and easy registration can be found online at www.westonll.com.  Any questions about the season or registration, please contact Player Agent Jason Wilder .  Also, please pass this information on to any incoming first graders, as we do not have a way to communicate with them yet.

Bisceglie Field Reconstruction
If you have driven past the fields in the past week you may have noticed piles of dirt on B1.  The entire infield is being reconstructed to improve drainage.  This is the first phase of a multiyear plan, funded by WLL and Weston Parks & Recreation, to reconstruct all three infields and reduce the issues we’ve had in recent years.  We expect the field to be ready for this fall, but for limited usage only.  B2 and B3 will receive the same treatment in the future, either both in 2011 or one each in 2011 and 2012, depending on funding.  It’s great to see that, even in this difficult economic climate, that the Town and WLL can work together to keep our fields in top condition.

Summer Baseball
WLL had a big summer program this year, providing baseball opportunities for players of all ages.  WLL sponsored 7 teams, more than ever before:  District 11/12, District 9/10, Travel 11, Travel 9/10, Travel 9, Travel 8A and for the first time ever, a Travel 8C for 2ndgraders.  Additionally, we continued our Sandlot program for even younger players.  In all, over 100 players participated on summer teams.  That participation level is our measure of success, but our teams also performed well in the win-loss column:  the District 9/10 team went 4-2 in District play and also won the difficult PJ Foley tournament.  The District 11/12 team made it to the semifinals of the Stamford Invitational, defeating teams from Stamford and Ridgefield along the way.  The Travel 8A team had a 16-6 overall record.  More importantly, all the players had the opportunity to improve their skills while playing baseball with their friends.  Congratulations to all the players.

New Umpire In Chief
We are pleased to announce that we have hired Rich Gillespie to be our new Umpire In Chief.  While filling the shoes of our retired Russ Miceli would be a challenge for anyone, Rich brings many years of umpiring experience, including being selected to officiate Little League World Series tournament games.  Rich will be responsible for training and scheduling our youth umpires and will also umpire many of our games starting this fall.

Wooden Bat League
Weston Little League will be running a wooden bat pilot program this fall in our highest division.  Over the past several seasons we have had limited use of wooden bats for our National League players, when playing inter-town games against Ridgefield and in the end of season Tournament of Champions.   We think that wooden bats can help players become better hitters and put more balls into play which provides more opportunities for the defense.  For this fall season, the National League will use wooden bats exclusively; metal bats will not be allowed.  WLL will provide the teams with enough wooden bats so you do not need to purchase one on your own.  Over the winter we will review the results of the test.

Volunteers Wanted
WLL is a 100% volunteer run organization.  It takes a lot of volunteers to keep such a large league running and we’re always looking for more help, whether it be as a coach, in the snack bar or even as a Board Member.  Please contact Coaching Director Rich Hassan    if you are interested in coaching.  Elections for the Board of Directors are held every November.  If you are interested in learning more about how rewarding it can be to serve on the Board, please contact Board President John Clevenger .

Welcome Back!  We’ll see you at the fields.
